The Old Fashioned

The most iconic classic cocktail and for good reason.

The Old Fashioned is thought to be the original cocktail. The oldest writings describe it as distilled spirit, water, sugar, and bitters.  It is rumored that this cocktail earned its name after other cocktails were created and people began ordering cocktails “the old fashioned way.”  This was eventually shortened to “old fashioned.”

It is rumored that the cocktail was originated at the Pendennis Club here in Louisville, KY in 1881. Other literature makes mention of it prior to the 1881 date in Louisville, but who are we to let some silly facts get in the way of a good story? Regardless of whom invented it, we are so glad that they did.

Traditionally this cocktail calls for water and bitters with a sugar cube.  The water in our 7 syrup fills this criteria.  Please, for all that is good and holy, don’t muddle a cherry and orange and add seltzer to this drink- unless you are at a Wisconsin Supper Club.  Luckily we have made it easy for you and created the most perfect syrup for an Old Fashioned, our 7 Syrup. 7 spices and 3 different sugars make this syrup a match made in heaven with bourbon.

2 oz Kentucky Straight Bourbon
.5-.75 oz Make & Muddle 7 Syrup
Dash Orange Bitters
Dash Aromatic Bitters

In a mixing glass with ice, add first four ingredients and stir until cold. Strain contents from mixing glass into an old fashioned glass with ice. Garnish with orange peel, expressing oils over the drink and around the rim of the glass.
