Old Fashioned Week 2022 – Smoked Tequila

Smoked Tequila Old Fashioned

Glass: Old Fashioned
Served: On the rocks
Yield: 1 cocktail

We love our Make & Muddle Traditional Old Fashioned, but we also have some other cocktails that are just as delicious smoked. One of those is our Smoked Tequila Old Fashioned that uses our 3 Herb Gracious Grapefruit Syrup. The smoke from the tequila and the char from the citrus in the syrup are perfect for one another.

2 oz Good Reposado Tequila such as Don Julio, G4, or Fortaleza
.5 oz Make & Muddle 3 Herb Gracious Grapefruit
Dash Lime, lemon or grapefruit bitters
Dried sage leaves
Fresh sage leaves or grapefruit peel for garnish

Instructions: (see video demo below)

Fill a rocks glass with ice water and let it chill while you build the cocktail. The cold and wet in the glass is what enables the smoke to adhere to the inside of the glass. In a mixing glass with NO ICE, add the Reposado, 3 Herb Gracious Grapefruit syrup, and the bitters. On the cherry coaster, place a few smoking chips and a few dried sage leaves. Dump out the ice water from the rocks glass, light the sage and smoking chips, and turn the glass upside down onto the coaster and leave it there so that the smoke fills the glass. While the glass is still smoking, add ice to the mixing glass and mix the cocktail until very cold.

With the cardboard coaster ready, quickly lift the smoked glass and place the coaster over the top to trap the smoke. Lift the cardboard coaster and add ice to the glass and quickly replace the coaster. When you are ready to strain the cocktail into the glass, lift the coaster and pour the cocktail into the smoked glass. Garnish with dried or fresh sage leaves and enjoy!

Here are a couple smoked cocktail kits on Amazon that will simplify the process and allow you to quickly make more than one drink. There are hundreds of these types of kits available across a wide range of pricing if you’re wanting to conduct your own search.
